Microwave ovens do not cause cancer. They do not even produce the type of radiation that causes cancer. Microwave ovens produce non-ionizing radiation.
There are two types of radiation emitted by energy sources:
1. Ionizing Radiation: This type can change the way our cells work and lead to cancer. But only if one becomes exposed to a significant amount of ionizing radiation.
Sources if ionizing radiation include:
• The sun
• X-ray machines
• Radiotherapy
One needs to have significant exposure to sunlight and x-rays to be at risk of cancer. Taking a few x-rays in one’s lifetime will not put one at risk of cancer.
2. Non-ionizing Radiation: Microwaves emit this type of radiation. It does not have the ability to change the way a cell works and cannot lead to cancer.
